Stroke Clubs play a vital role in improving the lives of those affected by stroke in the community. Through varied and innovative activity programmes delivered by dedicated organisers and volunteers, the Stroke Clubs make a huge difference to the quality of life for local stroke people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the year, we organise as many fundraising events, activities and street appeals as possible. We do this to raise money needed to continue providing free services to the stroke affected community in New Zealand.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first impact of stroke can be an overwhelming experience with a lot to learn and understand. Suddenly, you may have to cope with serious physical, psychological, emotional, social and financial consequences. At this time a Field Officer can provide support by listening, providing resources and education and help to navigate the hospital system.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why it is important for everyone to recognise the signs right away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>At least one in three New Zealanders can\u2019t recognise the signs of a stroke. Delayed recognition means delayed medical intervention. Delayed medical intervention can have tragic consequences.<\/p>\n

Stroke survivors require regular follow up in the community and should be referred for further therapy or specialist assessment depending on their problems.<\/p>\n

In 2009, funded by the Ministry of Health, the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand conducted an audit looking at the provision of stroke services in New Zealand hospitals in the first seven days after stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n

All 21 DHBs provide acute stroke care, and all participated in the Organisational Survey.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report\u00a0<\/span>Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management 2010<\/em>, released 20 December 2010, was developed by the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand in collaboration with the New Zealand Guidelines Group and the Australian National Stroke Foundation \u2013 with input from M\u0101ori and Pacific advisory groups.<\/p>\n

It recommends that all people admitted to hospital with stroke should expect to be managed in a stroke unit by a team of health practitioners with expertise in stroke and rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
